Save the date! Next CERT Final is tentatively scheduled for December 8th
The current schedule has the next series of CERT classes ending with a major disaster at the Fairfax County Fire Academy on December 8th. Please mark your calendars to help out if you can!
Alexandria CERT Drill Needs Volunteers Ocotber 6th
Kim Purcell, the CERT coordinator for Alexandria is looking for volunteer actors to serve as victims. Their CERT team will be holding a CERT drill on October 6th from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Ben Brenmann Park.
They need about 50 actors to serve as victims to help with the drill, so that all of their CERT
members will be able to participate.

Update on Business Preparedness Summit
Our own Andrew Levy is now the Citizen Corps Council speaker. As well as helping out with CERT, Andrew is also Chairman of the Fairfax County Citizen Corps Council.

CERT Refresher Time
The first of the CERT Refreshers has been scheduled for Wednesday August 1st. Currently, the class is full (and it only took less that two hours from when it was announced!).
This class will be on the hazards to first responders from Methamphetamine Labs. This informative two hour presentation taught by the Special Investigation / Narcotics unit of the Fairfax County Police Department will provide an overview of the recognition and the responder hazards to these clandestine operations.
The presentation will focus on:
1. Devastation of the drug
2. Identification of the drug
3. Manufacturing of the drug
4. Clean up of the drug
5. Children at risk
6. Statistics of labs in Virginia
7. What you can do

Register Online for the July 20 Fairfax County Business Preparedness Summit
Fairfax County’s business community is encouraged to register now for the Fairfax County Business Preparedness Summit to be held on Friday, July 20. The summit, for small and large business owners and operators in Fairfax County, will be held at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.
On-site check in begins at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast; the opening session begins at 8:30 a.m. The summit will end at approximately 12:30 p.m. Space is limited, and those interested in attending should register at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/emergency/bizprep.htm.

The Program
Gerald E. Connolly, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and Erin Streeter, acting director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready Campaign, will keynote the opening session. Bill Lecos, executive director of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, will provide a welcome on behalf of the business community.
A series of three workshops will highlight the morning, with each workshop offered three times so that attendees can participate in each session.
In one session, Teri Flyn, Fairfax County Risk Management Division, and Cullen Henderson, Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management (OEM), will cover business preparedness and continuity of operations planning. David Molchany, deputy county executive, and John Hudson, Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management, will address how special needs planning should be considered by businesses. And Ellen Kamilakis, also with OEM, will discuss the Fairfax County Citizen Corps programs and how they can work with area businesses.
Lucy Caldwell from the Virginia Department of Health; Merni Fitzgerald, director of the Fairfax County Office of Public Affairs; and Brian Worthy, Fairfax County Office of Public Affairs, will cover risk communications and emergency messaging in the second workshop.
The third session features a tour of Fairfax County’s alternate emergency operations center by Mike Ryan, Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management, along with a presentation on the National Incident Management System from Brian Brendel, Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management. Also part of the presentation will be Sharon Smith, Fairfax County Police Department, and Rick Roatch, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Exhibits and displays will be available throughout the day, including the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Volunteer Fairfax and the American Red Cross. Each attendee will receive a notebook of business preparedness materials.
The program concludes with closing remarks by Chairman Connolly, along with a question-and-answer session.
Business representatives are encouraged to attend to learn how to better prepare their business for an emergency, as well as to learn how Fairfax County will operate during an emergency.

USFA Announces New Web-based Online Training System
The U.S. Fire Administration's National Fire Academy is pleased to announce the launch of a new Web-based online training system - NFAOnline. NFAOnline provides an easy, one-stop Web site where fire and emergency services personnel, first responders, emergency management personnel, and the general public will find free training and education programs that they can complete at their own pace.
"Now is the time for us to embrace the future and improve our education through distance learning," said NFA Superintendent, Dr. Denis Onieal. "NFAOnline provides another option to help further the professionalism of the nation's fire and emergency services and strengthen their ability to combat all hazard emergencies."
NFAOnline provides a user-friendly, state-of-the art training system with technical support and the ability for the student to immediately print a certificate and transcript. The primary effort of NFAOnline is to make available training and materials for the fire service, particularly those unable to attend resident courses in Emmitsburg, Maryland .
There are currently eight courses available on the new NFAOnline. Additional courses are in development and will be added in coming weeks. Course subjects include fire prevention, fire service supervision, incident management (ICS 100 and ICS 200), emergency response to terrorist incidents, and emergency medical services.

Terrorism Toolkit
I was looking around and came across the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Terrorism Toolkit. I thought it was timely given the recent activity in England and Scotland.
